What is a Woman in
Transition?
A Woman in Transition

What is a Displaced Homemaker?
Displaced Homemakers are women who have spent years at home caring
for families and must suddenly enter the work force. This is
usually due to divorce, separation, loss of public assistance, or
death, disability, or unemployment of the spouse. In 1997,
there were 17 million displaced homemakers in the United States.
Nationally, approximately one out of every eight women can be
defined as a displaced homemaker.
(Women Work, Poverty Persists: A Status of Displaced Homemakers
and Single Mothers in the United States. Women Work! 1998)
Displaced Homemakers Act
In 1978, the NM Legislature found there was an increasing
number of women in New Mexico finding themselves as displaced
homemakers and as a consequence suffered from greatly reduced
incomes, high rates of unemployment due to age, lack of work
experience, discrimination, and limited or no opportunity to collect
public assistance. It was the purpose of the "Displaced
Homemakers Act" to address these issues.
