NM COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN- DISPLACED HOMEMAKERS OFFICE

The Displaced Homemakers /Women in Transition Program is dedicated to providing women in transition and displaced homemakers with the skills and confidence to help them achieve economic and emotional self-sufficiency for themselves and their families.

What is a Woman in Transition?

A Woman in Transition could be:

  • Single Parent
  • Moving from one job to another
  • Ex-offender
  • Moving from Education to the Workforce
  • Domestic Violence Survivor
  • Other women who are looking to improve their employment opportunities

What is a Displaced Homemaker?

Displaced Homemakers are women who have spent years at home caring for families and must suddenly enter the work force.  This is usually due to divorce, separation, loss of public assistance, or death, disability, or unemployment of the spouse.  In 1997, there were 17 million displaced homemakers in the United States.  Nationally, approximately one out of every eight women can be defined as a displaced homemaker. (Women Work, Poverty Persists: A Status of Displaced Homemakers and Single Mothers in the United States.  Women Work! 1998)

Displaced Homemakers Act

In 1978,  the NM Legislature found there was an increasing number of women in New Mexico finding themselves as displaced homemakers and as a consequence suffered from greatly reduced incomes, high rates of unemployment due to age, lack of work experience, discrimination, and limited or no opportunity to collect public assistance.  It was the purpose of the "Displaced Homemakers Act" to address these issues.
